William Day

Major William A. Day TXARNG Ret, otherwise known as Bill or Grumpy, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, April 06, 2014. He was born 10 Nov 53 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Brevetted Brigadier General TXARNG Ret Richard Kenneth Day and Sue Ann Kinkead Day of San Angelo, Texas.

He grew up in San Angelo and Austin, Texas, graduating from Lanier High School in 1972. He joined the Texas Army National Guard in April 1975, and was assigned to HHC 2nd Brigade 49th Armored Division. In June 1979 he graduated from OCS, and on May 19, 1980, he resigned from his Full Time position and accepted his commission as Second Lieutenant. Upon completion of Armor Officer Basic Course in Ft Knox, KY in 1980 he assumed his duties as Platoon Leader at Company C 3rd Battalion 112th Armor at Brady, Texas. He then transferred to full time capacity at HHC 111th Engineer Battalion in February, 1981, serving as Battalion Training Officer. Military Assignments with the 111th Engineer Battalion include Equipment Platoon Leader Reconnaissance Officer HHC Company Commander, where he was promoted to Captain Assistant S3 S1, to Battalion Executive Officer, where he was promoted to Major. He assumed duties as Full Time Administrative Officer in April 1986. Federal and state military awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Texas Outstanding Service Medal, The Adjutant Generals Individual Award, and various service awards.

After retiring from the Texas Army National Guard in 2000, he began doing minor maintenance jobs, as Grumpy Toad Construction, for the Department of Human Services and Adult Protective Services, including but not limited to wheelchair ramps, widening of doors, repairing floors, installing air conditioners, and other miscellaneous duties to benefit the elderly clients.

He regularly attended and held responsibilities at Liberty Baptist Church. He played guitar and loved to sing. His hobbies included Muzzle loading Black Powder rifles and pistols, sailing, playing Pass the Pigs, and flying all over the world via his flight simulator.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie L. Day son, Jeremy wife Christina Day of Stanton, Texas, daughter, Amanda husband Matt Rusher of La Junta, Colorado, daughter Angela husband Clint Lisle of San Angelo, Texas, and son, Sgt. Michael D. Spivey USMC Ret of San Diego, California along with 6 grandchildren, Mackensy Day, Ashley Day, Kaylea Day, Alexys Majkowski, Hunter Majkowski, and Emilee Day brothers, Mike Day, Brian Day sisters, Barbara Freytag, and Kim Walior all of Austin, Texas, and many brothers and sisters in Christ.

A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Memorial Park, Highway 277, Abilene, Texas Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 11:30 am, a Home Going Celebration will be held at Liberty Baptist immediately following graveside.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a memorial donation be made in his name to Liberty Baptist Church, 1149 E. South 11th, Abilene, Texas
