MSgt William “Bill” L. Powell Sr. USAF (Ret.), 85, of Abilene passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Abilene.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at 11:30 AM at Fountain Gate Fellowship Church, 909 N. Willis, Abilene, TX. Interment will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. A visitation will be held Monday, May 2, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 US HWY 277 S. Abilene, TX.
Bill was born on November 16, 1936, in Ryderwood, WA to the late Fred and Willie Powell. He attended High School in Washington State where he met the love of his life Lois Williamson. They were married in Longview, WA on June 11, 1955. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 21 years of service. They were blessed with 3 children, 2 boys born in the states and 1 daughter born while stationed in Germany. During his career Bill and family were stationed around the world including Iceland, Thailand, Germany, and Guam.
After retirement he worked for the Honda and Toyota auto dealerships as parts manager for many years until he opened Honda-Automotive where he worked until his retirement. Bill enjoyed hunting, woodworking and fishing but mainly loved to attend his grandchildren’s events, concerts, and travel to casinos with Lois. He loved to tell jokes and laugh with family and friends, the cornier the better. After Bill had suffered a stroke and was unable to speak, he handed his daughter a piece of paper with a joke on it. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lois Powell; children, Laurie Powell, William Powell Jr; grandchildren, Nicholas Powell, and wife JoAnna, Thomas Crim and wife Heather, Deron Crim and wife Kelly, Phillip Elder and wife Tammy; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Fred Powell Jr., Ruby Davis, Shirley Hurst, Beverly Powell; numerous extended family and friends.
Bill was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Scott Powell.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Hendrick Hospice especially Gloria, Aimee, Stephanie, Jamie, Dr Mossack, Sharon, and Veronica.
