Willie Spurny

Willie Mae Labay Spurny, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at her home in Merkel. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 25th in the Garden of Ten Commandments at Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday with Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Willie Mae was born on November 23, 1930 in El Campo, Texas the daughter of W.C. Labay Sr. and Leona Louise Meyer Labay. She worked as a telephone operator for ATTSouthwestern Bell for 32 years never missing a day of work throughout her long career. After retiring in 1990, she moved to Merkel where she was a member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church.

Willie Mae loved to cook and was an active part of a craft group that made quilts for the past 17 years. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.

Survivors include her children, Kathryn Ann Sutton and husband Larry of Merkel, Carolyn Ann Steed of Sylvester and Joseph Michael Spurny and wife Sherri of Midland grandchildren, Christopher Mark Beall and wife Christina of Austin, Allan Thomas Herrera of Sylvester, Melanie Ann Herrera of Odessa and Keri Francis Herrera of Abilene great grandchildren, Landen Matthew Beall of Austin and Destiny Hope Herrera of Abilene her twin brother, William Labay Sr. of Nome, Texas brothers, Dewey Labay of Hampshire, Texas , LG Labay of Rosenburg, Texas and Glenn Labay of Fort Stockton, Texas one sister, Joan Labay of Nome and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones.
