ZL was born in Lamesa, Texas. Starting out as a teenager, he served the grocery stores of Abilene, Abilene surrounding areas and for a time, Phoenix, Arizona. Serving the Furrs grocery stores for 24 years and other companies before and after Furrs, he was a dedicated employee to every store in which he worked for over 50 years.
ZL had many interests and hobbies over the years. He loved to fish and spent a
considerable amount of his time in retirement out fishing and boating with his family. He had a musical side, as well. He loved the guitar which he spent many hours playing during what little free time he had between work and caring for his family. However, after he retired, his passion for woodworking took off. ZL loved to make practical and beautiful pieces of woodwork, from clocks to step stools, from cutting boards to end tables. His pieces now decorate and outfit the homes of many family, friends and strangers. These works' beauty and utility mean they will continue to be admired and used for many years to come.
On July 13, 1961 he married Verna Dell Ledbetter to whom he was married for 59 years
until her death on April 30th, 2021. Together they had two sons, Thomas Ray Brister who passed away in 2003, and Allen Lee Brister who currently lives in Clyde.
He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Marvin Lee and Syble Marie, His wife Verna, and his son, Thomas Ray.
He is survived by his Sister, Jozell Brister, his son Allen Lee, two grandchildren Thomas James and LeiSann Marie, and two great grandchildren, Peyton Ray and Thomas Ray.
Numerous, nephews, nieces, brothers' and sisters'-in-laws miss him. As will all of us.
